 Arrowtown
One of the prettiest little towns in New Zealand, Arrowtown guarantees hands-on activity in a unique, serene environment. Arrowtown sprang up when gold was discovered in the Arrow River in 1862, and people flocked into the area to make their fortune. Originally a town governed by chaos and those who had guns, now Arrowtown is a peaceful historic township. Arrowtown sits on the Arrow River, an easy 20 minute drive out of Queenstown. Surrounded by hills and the Remarkables mountains, it's hard to decide which is more beautiful, the view or the town. The council holds very strict by-laws on appearances and preservation orders protecting over 70 historic buildings, and it is now the only historic town in New Zealand functioning as normal. Originally cleared of trees, the area was planted with sycamores and oaks, now contributing to the overall beauty of the landscape, especially in Autumn. Arrowtown is glorious in summer too, when the colours and atmosphere of the town are at their best. Here you can pan for gold, often finding one or two little flecks, and sometimes even a small nugget left in the pan, you can take a historic walk to the Chinese mining huts, admire the old buildings, or explore the Lakes District Museum. If historic is not your thing, then you can take a picnic down by the river and go paddling, see a movie in the classy boutique cinema, or check out the local NZ stores.
